Product Owner

Ascend Indiana (Ascend) is a fast-growing nonprofit on a mission to address Indiana’s workforce misalignment. Ascend’s vision is for Indiana to be a place of economic opportunity for all. An initiative of Central Indiana Corporate Partnership (CICP), Ascend collaborates with corporate, education, philanthropic, and community partners, and is well-positioned to play a leadership role in addressing Indiana’s workforce challenges.

The Product Owner will ensure the Ascend Network product team is prioritizing the most important work and operating as effectively as possible. The Product Owner will refine product requirements and track their outcomes over time. In addition, the Product Owner will manage a suite of tools and data centers and determine how to organize and systematize reoccurring product best practices. The Product Owner’s work will ensure that the product team understands what is and isn’t working while optimizing usage of these tools to inform product priorities and team strategy. The Product Owner will also support additional projects as assigned by the Director of Product Management and the Vice President of Product Management.

To be successful in this role you must be...

Detail-oriented and effective in your prioritization to ensure a focus on outcomes.

  • You manage the product backlog, an ordered list of everything that a product needs and the requirements needed to achieve desired product outcomes.
  • You monitor, reprioritize, and communicate what work must be done next to enable organizational and team outcomes.
  • You turn high-level strategies into detailed, clear product requirements that the development team can effectively interpret and build.
  • You ensure requirements are properly applied to new development efforts and remove barriers from the development team that threaten the development timeline and outcomes.

Analytical in nature and able to use data to answer key questions and enable effective decision-making.

  • You work alongside the Director of Product Management to set and track progress against product OKRs (outcomes and key results).
  • You proactively review usage and outcome data to identify trends, opportunities, and risks.
  • You support the adoption of a centralized product dashboard in PowerBI alongside other project owners.
  • You work cross-functionally to answer questions and inform team strategy.

Organized in your approach to managing a suite of product tools.

  • You serve as owner of a suite of software products used to support Ascend Network operations, including but not limited to: Mixpanel, Hotjar, OneSignal, Mailgun, and Appcues.
  • You ensure the usage and value of these tools are maximized.
  • You identify unnecessary tools or opportunities to leverage new tools to better achieve team and organizational goals.

An effective communicator across a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

  • You develop integrated user engagement strategies leveraging product communication tools such as Appcues, OneSignal, and Mailgun.
  • You work alongside Ascend’s internal marketing team and external marketing vendor to create and test content to optimize user engagement and adoption over time.

Motivated by aggressive goals and driven to make an impact.

  • You are organized and outcomes focused. You track your progress daily and react quickly if you are not on track to accomplishing your goals.
  • You break down goals and develop weekly, quarterly, and yearly plans to achieve organizational objectives.
  • You manage and report against goals, priorities, and objectives to the Director of Product Management and the Vice President of Product Management.
  • You support additional projects and priorities as assigned by the Director of Product Management and the Vice President of Product Management.


  • 3.0+ cumulative GPA from either an undergraduate or graduate institution.
  • 1-3 years of experience in product management, data analytics, information technology, project management, or similar.
  • Demonstrated track record of success in leading projects and achieving ambitious, quantifiable outcomes.
  • A detail-oriented self-starter who can be given a need or objective, break it down into executable activities, identify questions that need to be asked, gather priorities and requirements, set and manage to milestones, and then execute effectively.
  • Ability to learn new technology tools and processes quickly. Proficiency in Microsoft Suite required. Experience with Jira, Mixpanel, or other product tools a bonus.
  • Track record of successfully working collaboratively within a team.
  • Demonstrate ethical handling of confidential information.


  • Manager: Director of Product Management, Ascend Indiana
  • Office location: 16 Tech Innovation District
  • Work schedule: Hybrid schedule Monday – Friday from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, in-person on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays each week.
  • Work week: 40+ hours/week
  • Travel: Statewide (5% - 10%)
