A conversation with Melina Kennedy, Chief Executive Officer at the CEOs of Indiana Corporate Partnership (CICP)
Indiana’s advanced industries are driving innovation, economic growth and opportunity across the state. As technologies such as artificial intelligence, automation and data analytics continue to reshape the workplace, employers, educators and policymakers are facing important questions about how to prepare Indiana’s workforce for the future.
In this Q&A, CICP CEO Melina Kennedy explores the role of advanced industries in Indiana’s economy, the impact of emerging technologies on business and talent needs and the steps stakeholders can take today to ensure Hoosiers are equipped to succeed in a rapidly changing world.
What are Indiana’s advanced industries, and why are they so important to the state’s economy and long-term prosperity?
Indiana’s advanced industries—including advanced manufacturing, life sciences, technology and agbioscience—are the foundation of our state’s economic strength and future growth. These sectors drive innovation, attract investment, create high-quality careers and position Indiana to compete globally while improving quality of life for Hoosiers across the state.
How are emerging technologies, such as automation, artificial intelligence, data analytics and connected production systems, changing the way advanced industries operate?
Emerging technologies are transforming how businesses design products, manage operations and serve customers. From smart factories and predictive analytics to AI-powered decision-making, these tools are helping Indiana companies increase productivity, improve efficiency and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving global economy.
How are these technological changes affecting the nature of work, and what skills are becoming increasingly important for workers to succeed?
Technology is changing jobs at every level, making technical skills important while also increasing demand for uniquely human capabilities such as problem-solving, communication, adaptability and collaboration. The workers who will thrive are those committed to continuous learning and who can effectively work alongside emerging technologies rather than be replaced by them.
What should employers, educators, workforce organizations and policymakers be doing today to prepare Indiana’s workforce for a future that is constantly evolving?
Preparing for the future requires stronger alignment between education, workforce development and industry. We need to expand work-based learning, strengthen career pathways, invest in lifelong learning opportunities and ensure that Hoosiers have access to the skills and experiences that employers need both today and in the future. Indiana’s success will depend on our ability to work together across sectors to build a talent ecosystem that is agile, inclusive and responsive to change.
