Work-based learning

Today’s Students. Tomorrow’s Workforce.

What is Work-Based Learning?

Work-based learning allows students the chance to apply classroom learning to real work environments—through internships, job shadowing, youth apprenticeships and more.

Through these experiences, students can explore careers, develop core skills and build workforce readiness before graduation.

For employers, it’s a practical way to bring students into your workplace and introduce them to your industry. Work-based learning is structured, scalable and a key part of Indiana’s new high school graduation requirements, which recognize hands-on vocational training as a vital path to student readiness and success.

Types of Work-Based Learning

The State of Indiana has identified eligible work-based learning experiences that fall into two categories

Micro-Internship

A short, focused work experience where students complete real workplace tasks under the guidance of an employer. Ideal for exploring career interests during short breaks or between semesters.

Learn More

A paid, mentored work experience offered through the Cooperative Education course (6162). Students gain real-world experience while developing employability skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving under employer supervision.

Learn More

A hands-on work experience for students who are not in a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, allowing them to apply classroom learning to real tasks while exploring a career field that interests them.

Learn More

A hands-on work experience for CTE students, where they apply the technical skills from their coursework to real projects in their chosen career field.

Learn More

A state-approved, multi-year program combining paid work and classroom learning. Students earn wages, high school credit, and often college credit while building professional and technical skills under employer supervision.

Learn More

A short-term, structured experience that prepares students to enter a U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Registered Apprenticeship. Students build foundational skills through classroom learning and hands-on work aligned to an active apprenticeship pathway.

Learn More

A structured, DOL-approved program where students learn a skilled trade or profession through paid, on-the-job training, classroom instruction, and mentorship. These programs combine employment and education to build mastery in a high-demand field.

Learn More

Industry Developed Team Challenge

A project-based experience where an employer presents students with a real-world problem or project. Students work in teams to design and present solutions that reflect real industry needs.

Learn More

An experience that brings real work into the school day. There are three types of Student-Led Businesses that are recognized by the Indiana Department of Education:

School-Based Enterprise (SBE)

A student-run business that operates within the school, selling goods or services to real customers. Students gain experience in management, marketing, operations, and finance while applying classroom learning in a real business setting.

Workplace Simulation

A school-based learning experience that recreates the environment, tools, and expectations of a real workplace. Students complete projects and interact with real or simulated clients. Virtual simulations are allowed only if the industry itself can operate virtually.

Student Entrepreneurial Experience

A student-created and student-led business that gives students the chance to plan, launch, and manage a venture with support from teachers and mentors. Students take full ownership of their business and learn how to operate it successfully.
