Student-Led Businesses: Real Work Experience, Right at School

Student-Led Businesses: Real Work Experience, Right at School

Student-led businesses are a powerful way to put the Indiana Department of Education’s definition of work-based learning (WBL) into action. WBL, defined as “sustained interactions between students and industry professionals in real or simulated workplace settings,” gives students authentic opportunities to explore careers, build essential skills and apply what they learn in meaningful ways. In student-led businesses – such as school-based enterprises (SBEs) and workplace simulations – students manage real products or services, tackle real problems and collaborate directly with industry professionals. These professionals often serve as mentors, providing guidance and feedback to ensure students develop skills that meet industry-approved standards of quality. Through this partnership, classroom learning is connected to the knowledge, skills and competencies students need for future success.

The examples found in the map below represent some of the most innovative student-led businesses happening in Indiana today. Click on each program to explore a one-pager that highlights how it works, what students are learning and how employers are getting involved. You can also use the map to see where each experience is located across the state.
